My second most favorite novel of her's and have re read it many times. Again I read this one in high school and that was 50 yrs ago!!
While not the most compelling story ever written, this book has a gimmick, and if it's something you love it's something you'll love. If not, then not. And there it is. The plot takes place on a fictional, English-speaking island where letters of the alphabet are slowly getting banned (don't ask why, it's ridiculous). The story, told through correspondence between two characters, is subject to these same rules, so the characters have to communicate without them. It's surprising how much you lose really early on, yet how much you can say with so little. So I love this kind of thing, and I've read this book three times (it goes fast, it's not like I'm skipping meals or anything). This is because gimmicks work on me almost as much as 20% off and a free gift with purchase, but if you're looking for something substantial in plot or truly progressive in style or scope, you'd better just turn around.
