This was good - but not as good as either Starter for Ten or One Day.

I'm really glad that First Reads gave me an opportunity to read this book. I think it would have slipped by me otherwise. Aside from the slowish beginning, Moondogs was superb! I loved getting swept up in the interconnecting plots and character arcs. The writing is graceful and full of vivid imagery. There was also a great momentum that made the last 100 pages fly by. My issue with the first section of Moondogs is basically a structural complaint. Taking 50 pages to introduce our characters, without offering any significant insight into how they will contribute to the larger plot, is a bit tedious. The writing is still solid, though, and the book clearly picks up. Moondogs (favorably) reminds me of Jessica Hagedorn's Dogeaters. Both are explorations of identity and power in the Philippines, and both feature relatively experimental textual styles.
