If we go to Venice when kiddo is in the right age range, I think this will be a fun, fun book to read. She can then use it as a map to find the bridges, alleys, etc. mentioned. This was a lovely little book--the writing was strong and there was a heavy dose of sweet whimsy. The plot struggled a little, wandering between a realistic world and a magical world, but that's likely to bug adults more than the intended audience. Adventure without violence, mystery without fright, a bit of romance without sex. Good for those who like adventure, pirates (not that there are any in the book, but it's an attitude), mystery, and fabulous settings.
This book blew me away. I read it for a class in Native American lit, and then read it again a few years later, and could easily read it again and again. It is just amazing - you'll just have to read it yourself!
