I've checked this out a couple of times from the library. It has sections for many kinds of handwork. I have used the embroidery section. Stitches are divided into categories, like outlining or filling stitches. Each stitch is shown and a description is given on how to work the stitch. Some finished work showing these stitches is displayed. When all you have is a design and no instructions on stitch type, this will give you ideas of what you can do. I made a pillow case with a picture of a cartoon pig in an old fashioned car and was able to showcase several new stitches that I'd never used before.
