Loved this book--can't wait to see him talk!
Having lived in HK for about 15 years i really enjoyed reading this. Martin Booths experiences as a young boy exploring Hong Kong and its culture in the 1950's is a great read. His mum was open minded about everything and threw herself into the culture, where his Dad remained quite an aloof Colonial. Thankfully Booth's mother encouraged her son to immerse himself into the culture and people. A great read for those who know HK and want to enlarge there understandings of some of the cultural aspects of the place.
I wouldn’t recommend Of Mice and /men to just anyone. Especially not emotional people. But for anyone used to a cold senseless world, Of Mice and Men is a good read. For three solid reasons. I would recommend Of Mice and Men. First the historical setting is neat&cool, secondly it explores some of society’s problems, and lastly the sad ending is suspenseful. The setting is the 1920’s around a farm area. The chanters are a mentally ill person, and a hard working guy who cares for him. The farm is a place to provide work for men. The farm provides a place of security & peace but danger & pain is around the corner. This is here the dog is killed, Lennie kills Curly’’s wife, and disagreements occur. This unquie setting encouragers wondering minds to explore the 1920’s. The book Of Mice and Men gives a good insight into the problems faced by society during that two periods. Such as African American like Crook who had basically nowhere to turn and still had to work although he was disabled. The problem society also forced was how to handle mentally ill people. For example Lennie was mentally ill and there wasn’t ant programs or services available. For this reason Lennie wondered and did bad things. Reading about these problems will engage you. Who doesn’t love fairytale endings? Well the ending Of Mice and Men isn’t happy. All thought the book you hear about Lennie& George’s good relationship but then at the end George kills Lennie. Some may see the killing as sign of dedication because it was so hard for George to let go of Lennie. Even when everyone else wanted to kill Lennie, George decided to just do it himself. The ending although shocking is still captivating. In conclusion Of Mice &Men is a good read if you aren’t all emonital and can handle real life status. Mainly for it unique setting. Real life problems, and sad but worth it.
