Lacking some of the dark wisdom as his previous works, Pygmy follows a similar narrative to Fight Club, with its terrorist infiltration by the protagonist to take down the pleasure loving and consumerist American state. I am a fan of a number of Chuck's novels and enjoy his writing style as much as his plots. The writing style in Pygmy is intentionally jarring, a mishmash of lost participles and conflicting tenses that lacks the dialectic conformity of something like A Clockwork Orange to let you really get into the narrative - in several cases I had to re-read whole sections to decipher what actually was happening. A lot of it, unsurprisingly for Chuck, is unpleasant. In terms of plot, Chuck is good at creating characters we should despise and making them compelling. In this instance, it seemed a little forced (inadvertent pun not intended). The relationship between Pygmy and his American host family was somewhat odd and didn't really justify why they seemed to be exempted from Operation Havoc. The motivation for terrorist action seemed shallow and cliched. Nonetheless, it was a quick and thought provoking read, even if not his best.
