I am a big JP fan but the format of this novel bothered me. Each chapter is written as a journal entry with the comments directed to a small child born with O.I. a brittle bone disease. Most victims of this disease don't survive the birth or have short life spans. In this case the child is 6 yrs old through most of the novel. The mother, father, sister, doctor and even the attorney each has their chapters which chronical a "wrongful birth" lawsuit brought about by the mother towards her best friend, who is also her doctor and brought this child into the world. The disease did not show up until the 27th or so week. The lawsuite is for money to give the child what apparently the mother thinks she needs. I found it hard to believe that all these words could be directed to this child, as if they expected her to survive to adulthood and read what kind of anguish they all went through because of her illness? It wasn't made clear why it was written in this format - but it was disturbing to me. The ending leaves the reader thinking, "all this for that??" many Amazon reviewers agree. She is a talented writer and usually controversial, but riveting. Her characters are not easily forgettable, but I liked her last two better..
