I don't frequently give books a 5 star rating and this one definitely deserved it. Loved it, loved it, loved it. Besides the fact that it's set in England, I love the way the author explores all aspects of death and dying. Fulfilling, tender, real and really well written.

Poignant stories of children and adolescents facing difficult situations. I love coming of age stories and these were my cup of tea.

Several months ago, I saw on IO9 a small write up on this novel. while offering insights and praise, the review just did not grab me enough to seek out the novel. Last week, as I made my weekly trip to my library I saw the book sitting there. Intrigued by the cover I took it home and promptly read it in 2 days. Mr. Bacigalupi present s a very original vision of the future. Centered in Thailand, one finds the age old play of power, expansion and contraction, redemption and a mix of good and evil that presents the murkiest of gray shade in a world where climate change has occurred and humanity move on. His characters are at once recognizable to the reader but laced with motivations and insights that while hearken back to the Bard of Avon are freshly molded in this more then capable authors hands. I look forward to reading much more from this Author.

I just worked out what Silver Duck was. LOL. Syd is obviously a MacGyver fan! Loved working out all the references. eg Had a bit of a problem with fairy-sickle, and even getting it reiterated as pharisaical stumped me for a while, until I figured out it was farcical. Good one, Syd. Seems those pesky males were naughty at some point in time, lol. Too much "Mark and Steve"'s for the Aussie cricket fans and "Phil" for the rugby fans..... Chip 'em and stick 'em behind a force field barrier, huh? All they're good for!
