Rick Riordan just keeps surprising me. The Lightning Thief was already a Masterpiece, and then he came and transformed it in something even better, polishing it and giving it a shining new view. You have not seen even half of what the demigods are capable of. New powers, abilities and another side of the story we already know, clearing old aspects and creating new ones. Percy's world is way bigger and complex than you think, and it will surprise you even more. Again you'll have to pick a side, but this is way beyond bad boys against good boys anymore, what are you waiting for?
This is the first of a trilogy. A book about climate change, political power struggles and work/family dynamics. In my favourite sci fi style, this book feels like it's a future that is just around the corner. It has all the political shenanigans and undercurrents a Generation X reader like myself would expect. The thrilling climax was just superb and made me want to be there to experience it. Spookily, it was almost foretelling the destruction of New Orleans from Hurricane Katrina, IMHO.
Basically equivalent to watching the miniseries, but with some song changes and a few other minor alterations. Mostly near the end. Notable differences: (view spoiler). I liked Cinderella's perspective near the end, but I was a little annoyed by how the narration couldn't seem to be consistent about Virginia's age, alternating between saying it had been a decade since her mom left her (which would make her 17) and saying her relationship with her father had been how it was for twenty years (which would make her at least 20).
