Yookyeong Kim Kim itibaren Wiktorowo, Polonya
A Novel told in the first person that takes place in South Africa in 1940s told through the eyes of a 5 year old English boy (Pekay) who grows to 17 during the book. We see his challenges through out his life from his experiences in a boarding school when he was 6 to life at a resident exclusive boys school for his high school age years. During it all characters (good and bad) come into his life who influence him and help him to grow. I wanted to meet and know some of them, but can only do it through the printed page. Doc was a favorite. A whole book could have been written about Doc. We read of the hatred between the English and the Afrikaners, and the bigotry of the whites against the blacks. Pekay seems to be above it all and grows and learns from everyone. This book has some harsh topics and gutter language. Not everyone would enjoy it. Courtenay tells a good story but sometimes puts in things that didn’t need to be there. He would probably defend it as being “authentic.” If I could go through and censor many words, others would find it a much better book. I give it 3 stars but would have given it 4 stars if I could have censored some of the language and themes.
Classic. Makes you want to blow shit up.
