I learned that getting older really, really sucks. While I enjoy Roth's writing ,this is a very sad book, filled with illness, aging, funerals and lingering glances back. This is a downer of book that you have to be in the mood for. I'm glad I read it, but on the heels of Cormac McCarthy's THE ROAD and Richard Ford's THE LAY OF THE LAND have decided to stay away from novels and memoirs by depressed older men for a while.
