Enjoyable but cheesy. McBain has a nice, lightly ironic tone, and his sense of scope reminds me a bit of Balzac. Nothing amazing, but worth checking out if you're interested in the evolution of the crime novel.
France and US following their revolutions. One main character is fashioned after Alexis de Tocqueville. Really liking the book (1/2 way through).
