Haruki Murakami has long been recognized as one of Japan's greatest (maybe THE greatest) contemporary novelist. This book blew me away. The main character, Kafka, is a 16-year-old runaway who stumbles across a beautiful library in his journey. The other main character - and the other story line you follow - is Nakata, the old man who can talk to cats. As the two storylines progress, they begin to parallel each other and eventually intersect. This book is difficult to define or categorize, but Murakami's writing can sort of be described as magical realism. The physical and the metaphysical are often entwined, and it makes for a beautiful and incredibly haunting story.
This book changed my life.... :)
