Gabriel, a dying 20-year-old, looks back on his life in Surrender. His family carries a stigma, a reputation for being "kooks." Perhaps this was a result of having a mentally handicapped brother; regardless, the fact that Gabriel shut his brother in a refrigerator, causing his death, did nothing to help the family's reputation. Since then, Gabriel has been known as "that guy" in the community. Gabriel confesses that he suffered from ridicule and lack of friends until the day Finnigan showed up. Finnigan and Gabriel made a pact - Gabriel would be the "good guy," and Finnigan would do the dirty work. From then on, strange fires begin...and Gabriel begins to realize Finnigan is burning the homes and property of people who have wronged Gabriel. Despite all of this, something is definitely amiss. Where is Finnigan when Gabriel is suffering so much? Where are Gabriel's parents? And why does Gabriel desire death?

If you have never read it, you should be ashamed of yourself. Infinitely quotable, as are all Austen novels: "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife." "I wonder who first discovered the efficacy of poetry in driving away love!" "Those who do not complain are never pitied." "What are men to rocks and mountains?"
