if you like cats read this book it tell interesting stories of cats and how they and their owners met. my favoret is the one about the dude who met his cat in iran. also another favoret is the one of the cat that became friends with the priest/booda. they are all amazing so read the book and see it for your self.
dharma bums takes place in california in the 60s. the two main settings are berkley and in the mountains of northern california... it is the story of two guys (keroac and his buddy) who are trying to get their buddhism on and begin to experiment with a life of simple purity and solitude. however, when they arent in the mountains, they are busy in the jazz and beat poetry scene, having orgies, and getting drunk or high. its an interesting look about the search for spiritual enlightenment and truth set with in the framework of experimenting with different lifestyle choices. i read this book either freshman year or early during my sophomore year of college, and i immensely enjoyed it. at that point in time i was really in tune with keroac's style of writing. sometimes it does get a little hokey, but there are a lot of passages that are just beautifully written, from what i remember. i need to re-read this one though.
