Not one of my SK favs...but I still remember at the end when the woman pissed all over the evil man and he was mortified because not only was it piss...but it was "a woman's hot first morning piss!" LOL! Great.

I found this a great read with an unusual structure and a great premise. The actual tale is the often told one of a nobody who rises up to become a somebody through perseverence, intelligence and the occasional helping hand; and yet Mr. Swarup manages to make it compelling through the aforementioned unorthodox structure. What also helps is that the hero, Ram Mohammed Thomas, feels very human and believable despite the extraordinary things he goes through. Had it not been so predictable and sappy (the whole epilogue feels a bit TOO sugarcoated all in all), I would'v given this 5 stars; but as it stands, this is a poignant and compelling read that I can recommend to practically anyone.

I enjoyed hearing this story from the perspective of those directly involved: Ed, Lois and Elizabeth Smart. I read it to satisfy my curiosity about what really happened with this news story. It's not a masterpiece of a book as much as a statement from the Smarts about their experiences. After finishing the book I gained added respect for this family and learned a little about the need for victims to have more rights in our justice system. I had never really thought about the concept that the Constitution protects a criminal's rights, but does little to protect the victim's rights.
