This is a book from JA Konrath, author of the Jack Daniels series (she is a Chicago cop with a penchant for going head to head with serial killers). This novel had alot of great advance praise and it actually lived up to the adjectives that were thrown around about it. It is suspensful, taut, fun, action packed, gore soaked and more. It is a roller coaster ride from start to finish. This ride straddles the line between action novel & horror novel, and it straddles it well, dipping in and out of both genres seamlessly. The story takes place in a small Wisconsin town (are there any other types of Wisconsin towns??) where a helicopter crashes (or does it?) and then citizines start to encounter "super soldiers" who use extreme torture to interrogate said citizenry about the whereabouts of a certain person. As the story unfolds a core group of citizens survive, out fight and outwit this group, who turn out to be modified serial killers, part of a secret program to use killers as soldiers, as opposed to turning soldiers into killers. The story steamrolls to the inevitable confrontation between the core group of survivors, the remaining "killers" and the person they were seeking. Overall a great satisfying read that is not bogged down with minutia, or with whiny throw-a-way characters. It is pedal to the metal writing that is relentless in its in your face descriptions of evil, or torture and hoelessness that some of the victims feel.
I didn't take to this immediately like I have with his other books I've read, but once I got into it, I kind of loved it. I mean, I didn't want it to end--that's love, right? A warning to potential readers: If you don't enjoy gratuitous profanity, don't read a single page of this. You've been warned so now you cannot complain. ;)
