I will never forget reading this book. It was available the weekend before my youngest daughter was born. I picked it up at the library that day (I was lucky enough to put it on hold early), and started reading. I read off and on the next couple of days, between getting ready for the new baby, and taking care of my then 3 year old daughter. That Tuesday, the 24th of June I went into labor and read HP between contractions until I couldn't concentrate anymore. So I threw it into my bag for the hospital, figuring I'd read after I had an epidural--and I did. The only problem was, the nurses and OB kept interrupting me while I was reading. Then I finished it in the wee hours of the morning after we brought the new baby home...and it is because of this book that I think my delivery, and transition into life with 2 small children went well. What I learned from HP and the Order of the Phoenix? How to breastfeed and read at the same time. The power of a good book!
In this third installment of The Annals of the Western Shore, Ursula K. LeGuin unsparingly portrays a young man's struggle to escape slavery and find his own road to freedom in a meticulously constructed and utterly convincing imaginary world. Richly appointed and masterfully told. A breathtaking read.
