i loved this book i would recomend it to all my friends
Disappointed in this one. Young Adult doesn't mean the author has to use the word "like" several times a page. And words like V-card? I found the writing style too juvenile, and I normally love YA books. I am definitely in the minority though, after reading lots of the other reviews. So I will chalk it up to a bad reading day. But I won't be bothering with the next in the series.
Having watched and loved the film, I was excited to read this novel for my Non-Western literature class. I was pleased to find it both encompassed and expanded on the movie. The novel (since it is written by the film's screenwriter) closely follows the movie, though it gives more backstory for the main character. I felt torn about this. I liked the mystery of the main character in the movie, but it was also interesting to get more details on her life. Of course, what I loved so much about the movie revolved around the music, cinematography, etc., something that obviously doesn't come across in the novel. So, while it was a good read, the movie is far better.
Good Good Good.
Never let Tom Hanks co-opt one of your beloved characters. Never let a bloodied volleyball be your best friend. Never trust your wife to "never give up hope".

I read this a couple of years ago, and it was so disappointing compared to his other books that I had read many years ago.
My least favorite of the Preston/Child novels, though it did have some rather hilarious Pendergast moments in it.
What a lovely book! What a perspective of the German Occupation! It was so much fun reading Juliet's letters as well as those of the people involved in the story. I loved the characters..Each and every one of them. The story did begin a bit slow for me, and I really didn't expect it to be told in form of letters, but as the story evolved, it totally got me sucked in. It felt like I had Juliet next to me, telling me about her life, her writing, her autobiography of Anne Bronte (which didn't sell very well, but still she was proud of writing)...and eventually about the most unusual way she got involved with the people from Guernsey (as Juliet says about this place " roughly seven miles long and five miles wide, with a population of 42 000 inhabitants"). Amelia, Dawsey, Isola, Booker,...and lovely, strong, bold Elizabeth! All of them are members of the Guernsey Literary and potato peel pie society. And yes, it's a funny name, but there is a lovely warm story behind it. They are all witnesses of the cruelty of the Germans and their Occupation and they are willing to share their story with Juliet, who is supposed to write down these heartbreaking (yet sometimes even witty) anecdotes. What was it like living on the Island during the War? What was it like after it? How hard it was for the Island inhabitants to send out all their kids to other places so they would be kept alive? Even while writing this review, thinking of this gives me the shivers! There were so many things which made me fall in love with this book. Firstly, I liked Juliet's character a lot! She is so witty, intelligent, warm, responsible person. And at the end - she fascinated me!!!(but I won't spoil the surprise by telling you why). I loved Elizabeth McKenna and the fact she was such a brave person...if there was a possibility to actually meet a book character in real life (yes it's silly but just imagine it) I would love to meet her! Boy oh boy, she is such a fighter..and you shall see why if you read this book. I really enjoyed this book, it was such an easy read, yet it's a story you will remember always. I highly recommend it to everyone!
I had a bit of trouble getting into the first story, but I was soon on my way through a great book!!
