I've read the most recent edition of this book, and can't say I notice substantial differences from the older edition in my library. If I have a serious quarrel with the arguments in this book, it's with the assertion that we all believe that the end justifies the means. 'We all' don't, because I'm part of 'we all', and I don't.

I picked up this book originally on the bargain books table at a local bookshop. I was heading on an international flight and decided to take it with me. I did not want the flight to end so I could continue reading - and I hate flying! I have since picked up another copy of the book as my original one is falling apart from being read and loved.

It probably isn't proper to say this is a Western Black Comedy, but it closely resembles one. Picture an aristocratic English family traveling up the Mississippi River on a paddle wheel boat with their entire entourage (servants, tutors, artists, musicians, hunter, a couple of aged Indian chiefs, horses, parrot and dog) during a time when the Indians are hostile. You can't begin to imagine the trouble they get themselves into. The characters are very interesting and the book is an enjoyable read.
