Clever but not smart, funny but not hilarious, good but not great. While Shteyngart does manage to skewer wealth and American foreign policy, he does so with such a limited palette--for example, the narrowly drawn protagonist--that the overall effect is pretty underwhelming. I think it received so many critical kudos because of its harmlessness.
