I was hooked by the first sentence: "It began the usual way, in the bathroom of the Lassimo Hotel." I needed to know what "it" was and what was "usual" about it. The interconnected stories are flawlessly beautiful in the writing, excruciatingly painful in the display of human suffering and longing, heartbreaking in their presentation of life's blows and their impact on the course of our lives. They are linked stories that revolve around two characters and the people who influence their fate. I read many of these stories in the New Yorker over the past few years, not knowing they were linked. They were powerful then, and even more powerful when I saw how they fit together. While not exactly uplifting, I was riveted by the characters' struggle against the pitfalls of life.
