I picked this up on the recommendation of a friend. Walls writes with a laconic style, never wallowing in pity or hate or victimization. She shows her family for what it was, warts and all, and how she and her siblings escaped, or tried to escape, from the insanity of their childhood. As I read the last few pages, tears welled up in my eyes, because here was a woman who had journeyed through Hell, yet who had built a successful life for herself. No playing the victim, no "woe is poor me!" -- only a sober recognition of what was and what had been lost, along with a reconciliation with her family.
