I was reading a discussion board about this book, where there was an argument about whether Joyce was a true genius, or just incomprehensible, and therefore overrated. I referred to this as the only book of his I've read, resisting the temptation to try to conquer Ulysses, and I realized that the only thing I even remember about it, even though I read it only a few years ago, is that it had some beautiful prose, but I found the protagonist irritating. I don't know what side that puts me on, but there you go.
