+ Unexpected and unusual, yet entirely compelling events. - Some awkward and incorrect sentence constructions, but likely due to the narrator rather than the writer. + Setting and tone appeal to me, as does the journey...bleak as it all is. + Teen fans of this book may graduate to The Road. (Perhaps I'm enjoying the current market fixation on dystopias and apocalyptic tales too much. Keep them coming, publishers!)
I'm usually not a huge fan of autobiographies, but this one really does read like a novel. Obama's narrative and his struggle to find his place in each situation in made this a page turner for me. Would be a great read even if he wasn't the President; that he is just makes it a success story. Hopefully he'll write another covering the next chapter of his life at some point.
Like the Parker character, like Connolly's style and plan to reda more of his stuff-and isn't that what every author should aspire to?
It was wonderful to read this book (for my husband and me) before visiting MACHU PICHU in 2005. We stayed in Cusco for about 12 days and went twice to Machu Pichu. It is an excellent book!
