I finished this book after a weekend of solid reading (never mind A-Level work, I didn't want to miss the college Reading Group's first discussion). Initially hesitant - I'd never read a book of this genre before - I was engrossed from the second chapter. I say chapter two because chapter one was utterly dull. So if you haven't read this book yet, my advice is: stick through the first chapter! Oh, and there's a shocker that happens around page 200 if I remember rightly! Overall, a great book, which really kicked Reading Group off to a great start. Recomended if you want to broaden your reading horizons a bit.
Bitter Fruit is a novel about post-apartheid South Africa, Islam, and incest, subjects which are so completely foreign to me that it was difficult for me to connect with the characters. I wanted to like and care about the story, but just could not. While I'm sure Dangor deserves the praise and awards, it just wasn't my cup of tea.
