Not being a fantasy fan, this type of book isn't my usual cup of tea. But a number of friends had read it and spoken highly of it, and I do enjoy Butcher's Dresden Files, so I gave it a try. I was astounded at how much I got in to it, even going in to page-turner-overdrive as I approached the end. Somewhere around page 350 some little alarm automatically went off in my head, as I reached the normal length of a paperback novel. I had to look at the page number, check the total length, and realized it was surprisingly longer than it looks in it paperback packaging, and it was not padded or overwritten, or boring by that point. There's a lot going on in and around Calderon, and we meet a lot of characters, see a lot of plotting and treachery, learn a lot of history, and even get hints of history and futures to be explored in future novels. And there's lots of fighting. Butcher does like his battles. I look forward to picking up Book 2 in the series (Academ's Fury), and expect many more to explore and fill out this interesting world the author has conjured. Oh, and surprise, surprise, the good guys win in the end.
liked this book better than da vinci code. hits home.
