The conceit of this book is absurd while the story is completely believeable, but that's just what Martel does: make the bizarre seem normal. Multitudes of writers have used animals to explore human nature, but few--if any--have done it as well as Martel (see also Beatrice and Virgil ). His prose is rich and his characters (human or otherwise) are fully developed, his thoughts are lofty but expressed in earthy terms... and all of these traits are on full display in Life of Pi. This may not be an absolutely perfect book, but Yann Martel may just be an absolutely perfect author.
