wonderful, witty writing. not enough plot. not sure why it was set in the fifties.
I had high hopes for this book. Not only was I intrigued by the subject matter, but I found the size and feel of this slim hardcover tactilely pleasing. Unfortunately, only about 25 percent of the entries explicated the vagaries of English spelling in a useful way. Still, it was worth reading through and I am sure I will handle it from time to time.
It was a really fun read. I couldn't put it down. Then I felt bad I read it all in one day! Now I'll have to wait forever before the next book.
It was the first book I ever read from him and it was big fun. And I read it over and over again after that first time.
I really didn't appreciate much about this book, but I decided to rate it two stars because there are a few very insightful moments into the condition of Germany as Hitler gradually took power. I actually had quite of bit of empathy for Ambassador Dodd, though some considered him to be a fool, clueless about the protocol of diplomacy. True, he probably wasn't the best man to be the U.S. Ambassador to Germany during the years before World War II, but he was a decent man and was generally true to his ideals. Much of the story has to do with the many lovers of his adult daughter, and that was really way too much information for me.
What is clearly, in my opinion, one of the greatest titles for a book ever.....really disappoints as a book.
