I don't know about the Jane Austen comparison, but this book is chock-full of interesting takes on contemporary society. I loved the descriptions of rare books and the Bernard Maybeck house that is featured. I want to go there!
هذا هو الأمر .. أنت لن تعلم أبداً مع فرويد .. هل الأمور حقا بهذه التعرية القاسية الذي يطرحها في هذا الكتاب .. هل الأمر حقا ليس الا رغبات جنسية و مشاعر كره و غضب ومجرد أمنيات ؟ هل كل التقدم العلمي و العقلي و النفسي للانسان الحاضر مازال لم ينقذه من احلام رجل كهف مسعور لا يدرك شيئا سوى الجنس و القتل ؟ .. بعض كتاباته صائبة و قد تندهش منها فعلا , مثلا كتابه الطوطم و التابوو كان مدهش و صادم .. ولكن هنا قد تمتعض قليلا و تقول بنفسك : السيجارة أحياناً ليست الا سيجارة يا سيد فرويد لا أعمم هذا الرأي على كل ما طرح بالكتاب طبعا*

Wonderful writing. A haunting, post-apocalyptic world/
I like this author's writing style. It was both richly descriptive yet easy to read, with natural dialogue and good pacing. I also liked the mysteries woven into this story, the old house setting and paranormal element. My main qualm with this book was the protagonist, Melanie Middleton. She really wasn't very likable, and I found it difficult to root for her throughout this book. She was as sterile as her white-walled condo, and seemed socially and sexually naive for a woman in her late 30s. I found it difficult to believe that a sexy man of the world like author Jack Trenholm would find her attractive at all. I did like the other characters, including some of the quirky minor ones--and wished they were more developed. I do love the mystery/paranormal romance genre, and will likely read this entire series as it's published. I just hope that the main character becomes more appealing and realistic.
