While this one of the many YA distopian novels, it differs from most of the others in that the overall tone is lighter. Sometime in the not so distant future, a virus has made all adults over the age of 18 sterile. Therefore, in order to keep the human race going, teens are encouraged to "bump."The story centers around two twins, Melody and Harmony, who were separated at birth and adopted into totally different surroundings. Harmony has been raised in Goodside and is, rather stereotypically, conservative and religious. Her values about sex and pregnancy are old fashioned. Melody, on the other hand, was raised in Otherside by very ambitious, driven parents, who think the only way to guarantee that Melody gets the best things in life is to pair her with the hottest stud on the planet. They support the concept of "pregging for profit." Parts of the book are predictable, and McCafferty's attempts at hip teen dialogue can easily become annoying. As one would expect, given the subject, there is a lot of casual hooking up. Still, it is a fun read. However, the end is inconclusive and makes it clear that a sequel is needed.
