** spoiler alert ** I read the spoilers when I was about a third of the way through the book and I immediately jumped to the last couple of chapters and read about Ethan's death and it's aftermath. I almost didn't finish the book (partly because I was crying so hard I could barely see to read). I decided to pick it up again this morning. Unfortunately for my bruised emotions the first scene I read was in Ethan's office when he goes down on one knee to tell Merit he loves her. The plot was so interesting though that once I started I couldn't stop until I had finished the book. The mayor's involvement with Celina and the drugs was an unexpected twist for me. I enjoyed getting to see more of Jonah and especially loved watching Ethan struggle to regain Merit's trust and love (even though knowing about Ethan's eventual death did make their scenes bittersweet). The Chicagoland Vamps has been one of my fav series. I would recommend it to anyone. Chloe Neill is such a great writer. She writes urban fantasy with plots that are creative and exciting but she also does a wonderful job developing her characters and their personal relationships. For me though the most important part of the series has always been the personal relationships between the characters especially Ethan and Merit. Watching their relationship develop is what kept me eagerly awaiting each installment. Ms. Neill did such a great job developing the characters I feel like I know them and I'm definitely in mourning for Ethan(I obviously need help differentiating reality from fiction). Without Ethan this will not be the series I have loved. I read that Chloe Neill asked that everyone trust her. I'll try but for now I feel the only thing that will save the series for me will be Ethan's complete return as the man/vamp he was (not a reincarnation, spirit, etc.) Since he is a pile of ashes in an urn I'm not sure how than can happen. Drink Deep cannot possibly come out soon enough. I pray we get Ethan back or at least some closure in the book and don't have to continue to wait. With a different ending this would have been a 5 star book for me. I'm not sure how to rate it as it is. Maybe when Drink Deep comes out and I see where this leads I'll have an easier time with this book.
