I'm about as Yankee as they come, but I've been curious about Jefferson Davis for quite a while. When we visited his last home in Biloxi recently, all they talked about was the damned furniture! This book was a fascinating opportunity to follow Jefferson Davis and Abraham Lincoln through the spring of 1865 and beyond. Swanson isn't a perfect writer, but he makes the context come alive: the outpouring of emotion at Lincoln's funeral and along the route of his train back to Springfield, the hesitation of people in North Carolina to welcome the fleeing Davis, the triumphal tours Davis made across the south at the end of his life. And Richmond, one of my favorite cities, plays a huge role in all of this. This book is ultimately about the founding of two legends.
