Written in child language of 8 yr old girl, poor, shattered by death of her father and abused by stepfather. She constantly feel responsible for 6 yr. old sister who is stronger than her, tougher than her in so many ways, but so close. The ending really made this book, otherwise so-so. Emma ends up being invention of Carrie's mind that has protected her through all she has endured and Carrie shoots stopfather. Still believes Emma is real at the end.
