The story is a real story and is absolutely fascinating. It is easy to understand why Vargas Llosa wanted to write about it. Roger Casement, irish, working for the British Crown, goes to Congo to report about the horrors going on in the 'playground' of King Leopold of Belgium. Later on, he is sent to the Peruvian Amazonian region. Outside his country he has a political awakening and starts seeing the colonia relation between Britain/England and Ireland. As a reader you follow his thoughts, his struggles (he is homosexual in this very homosocial and 'macho' world), his fall accused of treason. A great great story told by an experienced story teller. The problem I see is that the story is told in a way that makes you almost 'swallow' it. I don't like this kind of books that almost read themselves. As a reader I feel I put the automatic pilot and nothing is needed from me. The texts offers no resistance. In other words, fascinating story but boring reading. Nota bene, this comes from a somewhat odd reader that doesn't enjoy thrillers.
