Confesions of an English Poppy - Diner Confesions of an English Poppy-Eather(1821), relates Thomas De Quincey's early human condition and practices of poppy adiction at a opening when that narcotic was widely used for the maintenance of pang, and before its adictive qualities were properly understod. It is a effort which encompases amusement with tribulation as the author practices in pirouette the stares of poppy-induced dreams and the equaly vivid fantasies which are their counterpoint.

As a HUGE fan of the primary source for this novel, I noticed it on top of the young adult section bookshelf at the public library and thought I'd give it a go, thinking maybe it could be used to bridge the anxiety of young adult readers and big Willy, himself. It wasn't bad. I think it could have challenged young adult readers a bit more by infusing more original writing of Shakespeare himself, but it toyed with the notion enough to give young readers a taste of the bard's beautiful use of language. Since not much is known about Shakespeare's young life or married life, this book is truly historical fiction, but does a fantastic job of painting a picture of what life would have been like for Shakespeare and his contemporary common people. One con is I don't imagine this would hook many male readers, as it is told from Anne Hathaway's perspective and her love story with Shakespeare is the focus of the story. Maybe a sequel in Shakespeare's voice written for boys could do that trick? Although the author would definitely have to take some fictional liberties to put words into Shakespeare's mouth. ;)
