I cannot say enough good things about this collection of short stories. Having spent my life in the midwest, I fully appreciate Anderson's eye for the subtleties of small town life. His depiction of a fictional town and all of its characters is incredibly vivid. I love every story, particularly "Paper Pills." Actually, on reflection, I'm not even sure that it is a collection of short stories. My copy disappeared long ago in one of my many moves. It may, in fact, be a novel in a format that suggested a collection of short stories. I may have invented the short story title "Paper Pills" to describe a chapter that I particularly enjoyed. It doesn't really matter. Drop what you're reading and buy/shoplift it.
