I knew the movie first, and love to watch it in the middle of the winter, when I am tired of the snow and cold. For a little while it's warm and sunny. So I enjoyed the book, even though some of the romance is contrived. But one thing I think is realistic is Mrs. Wilkins' and Mrs. Fisher's changes of heart. Isn't that one of the bonuses of a vacation away from home, that it can give us a different perspective on our daily habits and can suggest different ways of reacting to the circumstances in our lives? This book was published in 1922, so I expected more reference to the Great War and its grey aftermath and influence on people's spirits. While the war is seldom referred to in the book, I wonder if it wasn't written in part as a tonic to the post-war depression. I'll keep watching the movie for its gift of sunshine and warmth in winter, and maybe look for some of this author's other books, to compare with Enchanted April.
