This was an okay book. Sedia's prose is lush and haunting. It was interesting to see Mattie deal with emotions as an automan, though occasionally Sedia would use turn of phrases which would work on a human, but because Mattie was an automan, it threw me out of the story--for instance, Mattie holding back her words on the tip of her tongue (how can she if she has no tongue?) Sedia does a good job painting Loharri, Mattie's maker, as arrogant and cruel, and at the same time making him somewhat of a sympathetic characters. I liked simultaneous desire and repulsion in Mattie and Sebastian's relationship (echoing possibly that between the Alchemists and the Mechanics). What really intrigued me, however, was the politics of the city: how in the beginning there was somewhat of a balance, but towards the end, the mechanics blind desire to automate the city turns into a disaster. The scenes with the gargoyles felt out of place. I understand they were the impetus for Mattie to go over the city, but with them as passive watchers, whenever the POV switched to them, it slowed the story done, and to be honest, their POV didn't really add to the story. I found myself skipping their passages. But other than that, it was a good story.
