I thought the elephant itself had little influence in the story, but ok. The book itself was a good reading, is actually easy to imagine how life at the circus was far from dreamy. Jacob is an interesting character; he is simple, well built and real. Marlena is actually pretty boring, she only takes some attitude when it comes to the horses and the horses' shows; a part of that she is that "Oh! I'm so delicate and useless" type. And, of course, the Old Jacob is actually the most charismatic and fantastic character of the book with his irreverence and funny thoughts, he's probably the major reason why I kept reading ‘till the end.
