This book has something for everyone: parents that deployed to Iraq, a 12-year-old boy who has to go live with grandparents he hardly knows, a hunting dog, and running away to “live off the land”. Erik’s parents (both of them!) are going to Iraq to serve in the Army, and Erik has to go live with his mother’s grandparents in North Dakota- grandparents he hardly knows: Oma and Big Darrell. Oma seems nice once he arrives, but Big Darrell seems angry and distant and difficult to get along with. In Erik’s first night there, he finds a dog near their house that had a tussle with a porcupine. The dog has lots of quills stuck in his face. Erik helps take care of the dog until they find his owner. But, the day the vet calls to say they found his owner (about 3 days later), Erik has grown attached to the dog- even naming him Quill. Near the end of the story, I was surprised at the emotional turn in the story, though I shouldn't have been if I's been paying attention. Big Darrell's anger and demeanor had to come from somewhere. A very good story that will appeal to hunters and dog lovers.
