Once you pick up this book, I dare you to stop reading. It is at once heart-breaking and tender. Walls tells the story of her upbringing in a family of four children with an alcholic father and eccentric artist mother. The family roams all over the country from mining towns to deserts to New York City where Walls eventually puts herself through Barnard College while her parents are living homeless in the streets. This is a rich family portrait of psychological disfunction, poverty and frustration, but told through the sharp eye and compassionate heart of the determined protagonist.
