Ulysses truly is a victim of its own success and notoriety. After years of hearing English professors' breathless descriptions of its wonder, how could the book possibly measure up to expectation? Indeed, unless it contained the Secret Meaning Of Life itself, it probably couldn't. None of this is to say that it is not a truly amazing work. It is. Joyce explores language and the patterns of human thought in ways that are still likely ahead of their time 73+ years after publication. I would advise potential readers to set their expectations lower. This may or may not be the finest literary composition in the English language, but if you anticipate new doors to be opened to you for the very act of reading the book, I doubt you'll be satisfied with the results. Still an excellent work of Modernist literature and definitely worthy of great esteem, I was nonetheless disappointed in the experience of reading Ulysses.

Fairly solid dark fantasy/supernatural tale. Due to a neurological disease inflicting his hand, a famous Rock & Roll guitarist has lost his ability to play guitar. He seeks out a bizarre doctor mixing technology and dark magic, leaving our hero with a strange device implanted in his chest. When activated the device gives him three hours of creative brilliance/power---only trouble is it can only be used 27 times and when it runs out our hero dies. Playing off the old "rock star dead at 27 myth" and Robert Johnson meeting the devil at the crossroads, there's a really interesting world here and I feel like we are really just scratching the surface with the first four issues collected here. I was expecting some more solid ties to the music, but otherwise I really enjoyed this and look forward to seeing where this goes.
