I decided to read this book after watching the first season of the show. I figured it might give me a hint of what was to come and I was curious if the show was following the series (they usually don't). What I got was totally different. In the books, Chloe's character is the only one that matches in the show. The mythology of the Mai remained mostly constant. Everything else was changed. Alyec's character in the book was the polar opposite of his character in the series (I love him in both, though. Alyec/Alek is my favorite character). Amy and Paul's drama with dating was changed around. Mrs. King is completely different. Brian isn't the sweet, and slightly oblivious, boy he is in the show. I rarely ever say this, but I actually like the show better. The books start out great. I did get slightly frustrated that she never found out what she was in the first one, but otherwise it was fine. The second book started to get a little off track. It wasn't as good as the first. The third book came with a picture perfect ending, and this is what I didn't like most of all. I like happy endings, but this one was too perfect. Everything just pieced itself together without a hitch. I can't really give examples of this over-perfection without giving the entire story away, but it was a little too much. Happy endings are good, but it never hurts to make them slightly realistic. I just didn't like that everything turned out absolutely perfect. It was just a little anticlimactic. This is the main reason why I prefer the show. It is more realistic and I don't feel like raising an eyebrow at every conclusion. It's a better portrayal of how something like this would play out in the real world. Don't get me wrong, I did like this series. It was a quick and entertaining read. Any problems I have with it didn't stop me from enjoying the books. I would definitely recommend them but I would have to warn that you can't expect them to follow the same plot as the show and be aware that the characters are completely different. The books and the show are two separate things bound only by the basic idea of the story. Otherwise, the series is wonderful and worth a read.
