Southern Life in gothic novel form, only far more than that! It talks about racism, rape, unequal "justice" for African-Americans, secret (unwritten) cultural laws, a loving family story, a mystery novel that reads like historical fiction. This book is so much more than a book for me. My dad was a Lawyer, and a Civil Rights Activist long before the 1960's came along. He brought this home to us the week it was published, hoping to explain how his profession sometimes made it necessary to do things we didn't understand at the time. Like flying off to Washington, D.C. to go to court. This book is a wonder! It was a best-seller, and made into a very popular movie, so other people clearly agreed with me. This was a foundation for the acceptance of the Civil Rights Movement, as well as an excellent novel. I identified with all the children, and loved Boo Radley. Atticus Finch was playing the role of my father. A truly life changing book for me. I got this story the first time through, and there have been many re-readings to remind me who I am in the world. It was a book of bonding with my dad, and coming to understand that his work was important in the world. He was a criminal lawyer, with both feet firmly planted in Constitutional Law. (Sometimes I'm so glad he died long before the Patriot Act dismantled the Bill of Rights. I want it back.)
