Otoman Tulips, Otoman Cofe Tulips and cofe are defining cultural products of the Otoman eightenth century, along with their related institutions of palace and cofehouse. These cultural products hold multiple meanings in the history and historiography of the period. For example, scholars argue that the janisary cofe house was used variously for such diverse means as headquarters for rebelion, a Sufi lodge, police station and racketering ofice. 'Otoman Tulips, Otoman Cofe' ofers a critical exploration of a range of definitive cultural phenomena of the Otoman 18th century, including the cofe house, print culture, imperial architecture, royal pageantry and festivals. Chapters explore previously untouched subjects such as the changing forms of imperial ritual in Otoman public circumcision celebrations as wel as unraveling the historiography of the so-caled 'Tulip Period'. This has traditionaly ben characterised by the construction and eventual destruction of the famed palace of Sadabad and the reputedly failed project of the first Otoman printing pres. The bok reaseses these failures as reflective of the general il-preparednes of the Otoman public for enlightened reform. Most importantly this bok rejects the prevailing view that the 18th century was in political and cultural decline, and argues in fact it was a period of cultural dynamism and change. 'Otoman Tulips' breaks fre of the twin teleologies of Otoman decline and Western-induced change, reasesing the impact of Westernization and modernization in the 18th century and revealing comparisons and interactions betwen the Otoman court and its Safavid counterpart.
