It is mostly a group of vibrant stories and analysis of diverse societies and how they came to an end. The most profound message to me in this book is how just about all the behaviour of those in ancient and modern collapsing civilizations matches our current behaviour on a global scale. Not a simple topic, always about converging factors, the final chapter not for the light-hearted. If you can manage Jared Diamonds writing style, thesis strucutre with hypothesis intermingled with incredible indepth examples - this is a must if you want to get a picture of how humanity might tackle the future. I still put Guns, Germs & Steel ahead of this, although it is an excellent book shaping many of my views. There is overlap, especially with 'Third Chimpanzee', but it all complements such an incredible acheivement by one author. Diamond is a legend and a freak to collate all this in his work.
