This book places the reader at the fringe of white civilization in the then Northwest Territory (Ohio) around the turn of the 19th century. Written with a mix of poetic and colloquial turns of phrase you are made keenly aware of the hardness and simplicity of this early American life. The book follows the Luckett family through their exile from Pennsylvania to the dense, near impenetrable, hardwood forests of Ohio. They build the first cabin for miles around and begin hunting and trapping. There is no traditional plot contrivances, the book simply meanders through their lives capturing both the small joys and the great tragedies and disappointments. The Luckett's are not without their share of hardship, however, though you sometimes are reviled by the actions of individuals the books reveals the new life and joy that can come from community. The book ends with hope for the future.
