I am the author, hence, no rating. But being my usual blunt self, if I were rating it, I'd give this book a wavering 4, possibly sliding into 3.75 It's good, but clearly, I'm no Shakespeare. But I did like the sword fights. Don't really see enough sword fights these days. But the naughty bits this time weren't as racy as in the previous two books, and the whole "Cora has a familiar" subplot is just silly. Also, with Linda and Dylan, I was like "just get it over with and make out already!" There's a lot of soap opera type drama in this, with the elites and magi getting about as much drama time as the halflings. The daemons and elves are pretty much cameo roles, but once the daemon lord Lucien really gets involved...whoa. As a conclusion to a tragedy trilogy, I suppose it all makes sense, but between you and me, I think the author is trying too hard. (>_>) All told, a strangely slow but fast conclusion to this dark fantasy trilogy, which ends with a body count higher than most of the writer's horror titles. Most of the deaths were pretty fast, over before you really see anything. But a couple of scenes near the end are kinda gory. I liked it, but I probably wouldn't let this title wander onto a YA bookshelf. I'd recommend it to fans of soap operas, and to fans of Anne Rice's Mayfair Witches trilogy, although I would recommend that people read Little Monsters (4.5) and In the Grasp of the Devil (4.0) first. Like the Mayfair witches' tales, these books are a slower paced read, but patient readers who make it through the first two will find the third an explosive and shocking finale after a long, slow boil. Oh, by the way, the date I "finished reading" is the day the book went live. =^)
