maybe reading this for the first time at age 48 was a mistake. i read for the pleasure, to relax, to exercise my mind. there's not much i won't read. one of my shortcomings is it's difficult to quit reading a book once i've started. with catcher in the rye that posed a problem. fortunately the book wasn't 900 pages long. I DIDN'T LIKE IT, but as is my mo i kept reading hoping to salvage something. an american literary classic? hmmm, i'll describe it differently....painful to read.
